Fine Arts: Music

Aesthetic judgments based on critical listening and the analysis of music are developed while focusing on interpreting rhythm, melody and harmony as it appears in musical notation. A strong emphasis is placed on the importance of music and its implications to career and leisure uses, as well as the enjoyment of music as a source of personal fulfillment.

Students in General Music explore theory and elements and structure of music while learning an instrument or extending skill in an instrument they already play. Students also have the opportunity to choose one or more of several elective components including Popular Music, Composition, History of Western Music, World Music, Careers in Music or Jazz Appreciation.

The choral music program seeks to develop musical competency and strives for excellence within the limits of the student’s capabilities. Concepts are essentially taught through student participation in the skill areas of singing, playing, listening, reading, writing and creating.
